Because of rigid hours at the 1835 Hinman cafeteria, off-campus eating is a cherub necessity.
“We have to go to restaurants in Evanston which are pretty expensive. It adds up,” said Judd Liebman of California.
Evanston offers a variety of eateries but only a select few give cherubs a tasty, but affordable meal.
Edzo’s Burger Shop
1571 Sherman Ave.
Price for burger and fries: $5
A winner of TimeOutChicago.com’s best guilt-free burger of Chicago in 2010, Edzo’s is a neighborhood burger joint near the Northwestern campus. Edzo’s Burgers are cut and ground every morning in the restaurant using beef that has never been frozen.
Edzo’s is open five and a half hours a day and is closed Mondays, but the fresh and filling burgers are worth it.
“It’s a thick, juicy burger that makes each bite feel like an entire meal,” said Aric DiLalla of North Carolina. “And unlike other places in town, it won’t break your wallet.”
Buffalo Joe’s
812 Clark St.
Single order of wings: $6.50
Buffalo Joe’s is a cherub favorite. The barbeque wings are tantalizing, but a trip to the homey restaurant is not advised for those who are afraid to get their hands dirty. Fortunately, Buffalo Joe’s, which is perfect for a large group that wants to watch a sports game, provides enough napkins to keep clean.
“It’s cheap, it’s quick and the food’s good,” said Jacob Frazer of Wisconsin. “There’s a vibrant atmosphere. The video games and the TVs really add to the environment.”
Clarke’s
720 Clark St
Two eggs, potatoes and toast: $6
Since 1968, Clarke’s Diner has served more than 7 million people during breakfast, lunch or dinner. But cherubs go there mostly for brunch.
“I come here every Saturday before my instructor meeting for a weekly brunch,” said Morgan Manella of Florida. “The eggs are really fluffy and the English muffins are huge.”
Clarke’s waiters are friendly and the portions are enormous.
“The prices are also very reasonable considering how much food they give you.” Manella said.
Jimmy John’s
1729 Sherman Ave.
Price for vegetarian sandwich: $5
Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches is a national chain that is perfect for college students. They promise to deliver their cold cut sandwiches within 15 minutes, or the sandwich is free. Also, Jimmy John’s makes their bread fresh every day.
“It’s delicious,” said Conolly Jurkiewicz of Missouri. “I like the bread, the meat and the price.”
Chipotle
711 Church Street
Chicken burrito: $7
Chipotle is a chain that offers cherubs a quick, affordable option. Customers choose chicken, barbacoa, carnitas or steak on a burrito, a taco in a bowl or in a salad. Then they have the option to pile their meal high with various vegetables and salsas.
“I like the burrito bowls,” said Naomi Bernstein of California. “It’s so filling but it’s not that much money. For a fast food restaurant it seems really fresh.”
Bernstein got a bowl piled high with rice, chicken, beans, guacamole, cheese and salsa at least once a week.
Also, Chipotle is only four blocks from campus, so when cherubs desire a quick fix, a filling burrito is the way to go.
Cherub life can be expensive. Though eating out is inevitable, some affordable options can keep cherubs from emptying their wallets for quality meals.
