A cultural pizza dinner

I’m a minority here, ethnically that is. Out of 84 cherubs, about 10 of us are ethnically Asian. And the community associates were able to learn our names easily, except for Kit Fox.

It was the fourth week, and he was still calling me Renee. Or Grace. Or Jessica. On average, he took about three tries to get it right.

The actual Jessica Lim, of California, had enough and decided to assemble the Asian girls and give Kit an on-the-spot quiz at check-in. We wagered a pizza dinner in the event that he failed. Not surprisingly, he did. He almost got there but mistook Jessica for Michele. And Grace.

We won, so to speak, and we were rewarded with dinner from Giordano’s the next night. My ultimate victory party was eating deep dish pizza in the common room of the first floor. Not too shabby compared to Hinman dinner.

We assembled most of the girls, Ryan Au from California and even included guest instructor Cynthia Wang. In a way almost reminiscent of elementary school, everyone shared a fun fact about ourselves before we could get our food. Then, we went around the circle and shared how we got our names. And to top it off, we shared what each of our names meant.

It was an odd experience and definitely something I never would have expected from the cherub program. But I was able to learn some interesting trivia about my fellow cherubs. And Kit never forgot our names again.
